What Did Cannes Lions Actually Tell Us?

I’ve spent the past week reading Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity recaps from brands, retailers, technology companies, and industry leaders.

AI. Creator ecosystems. Retail media. Personalization. Connected commerce.

Different topics. One common thread. Everyone is trying to optimize.

Faster content. Smarter targeting. Better experiences. Greater efficiency.

Those are meaningful advances, and they’ll reshape how organizations operate.

The more interesting question is whether we’re optimizing the right things.

What are we actually optimizing for?

For years, brands worked to become more human because people trust people more than they trust advertising. Today, AI can create content, personalize communication, and scale creativity in ways that seemed impossible only a few years ago.

The technology is remarkable. The opportunity is enormous. But technology has never been the objective.

It’s a capability.

The real decisions are still HUMAN.

  • Strategy or speed.
  • Trust or transactions.
  • Relationships or reach.

That’s the pattern I saw across nearly every Cannes conversation.

The technologies were different. The applications were different. The direction was remarkably similar.

Organizations are gaining incredible new capabilities. The advantage won’t come from adopting them alone.

It will come from being disciplined about what those capabilities are meant to serve.

Cannes has always been a reflection of where the industry believes it’s headed.

This year, AI wasn’t the story. Optimization was.

Technology will continue to evolve. The tools will continue to improve. The question leaders should keep asking remains the same.

What are we actually optimizing for?

What was your biggest takeaway from Cannes this year?
